India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has requested the authorities to intervene the elimination of shooting against the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham within.
India won seven gold medals from the game in the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast, Australia.
But it has been excluded in the Games for the first time since 1970.
At an letter to Nicky Morgan, he wrote:”The Indian public takes keen interest in shooting.”
His correspondence with the secretary of state to Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also noticed that India makes up more than half of 2.4 billion population of the 53-nation Commonwealth.
While he also added that”the worldwide Mobility Federation [ISSF] has given to share the cost for inclusion of shooting Birmingham.
“It seems the choice to exclude shooting is based on the grounds that shooting had never been a sport that is compulsory and there’s absolutely no place available for shooting events.”
Shooting was included in every Games apart from one since 1966 (Edinburgh from 1970), but isn’t among their event’s'core sports’.
Shooting – combined with archery, beach volleyball, cricket and Para-table golfing – expressed its wish.
An assessment panel comprised of representatives from national and local authorities, as well as Birmingham 2022 committee and Commonwealth England, was set up to assess the case of each sport.
But in June, Birmingham 2022 announced that women’s cricket , Para-table tennis and just beach volleyball was successful.
The movement has proved highly controversial, with India threatening to boycott the event if the game isn’t reinstated.
India topped the table for shooting the 2018 Games in Australia, claiming 16 medals from the area as a portion of the overall tally of 66 medals.
